She began her legal career as a litigation associate at Pettit & Martin in San Francisco, and later partnered to establish a firm in San Diego.

Elena has held leadership and legal counsel positions in statewide and local community, environmental and energy policy organizations. She currently volunteers as a mediator, a strategic advisor to community groups, and a mentor to community leaders and politicians at the local level.

Elena received her coaching certification from the ICF-accredited and highly regarded Coaches Training Institute in 2000. She is also a certified Neurolinguistics Practitioner, an MBTI qualified practitioner and a graduate of the Co-Active Space leadership program.

Elena graduated cum laude from Hastings College of the Law in 1992, and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of University of Washington, where she majored in Political Science. Prior to studying political science, Elena spent four years as a music major, with an emphasis on music history and classical guitar performance.
